Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is used across New Zealand to control possums, rabbits, deer and predators. It is lethal to dogs, and can stay in carcasses long after a drop. Check here before you hunt.

1080 safety checklist
Complete each item before hunting near a treated area.
- Check the DOC pesticide summary and OSPRI aerial operations for your hunting area.
- Look for on-site warning signs — never enter a signposted area during its caution period.
- Leave dogs at home, or keep them leashed and muzzled. Dogs die from eating bait or poisoned carcasses.
- Do not eat or share game taken from a treated area during the caution period.
- Know the signs of poisoning — vomiting, convulsions, collapse — and act fast.
